Two simple, well-established equations do the job. The Epley formula: 1RM = weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30). The Brzycki formula: 1RM = weight × 36 ÷ (37 − reps). Use a set in the 3–8 rep range. Accuracy is highest with fewer reps and drops off noticeably past ten.
The formula assumes the set was genuinely hard — about 0–2 reps left in reserve. A set with five reps to spare will underestimate.
Same exercise, same range of motion, same tempo. A cleaner rep this week versus a bounced rep last week isn't real strength gain.
Compare like with like over time. The trend across weeks matters far more than any single day's number.
Studies on prediction equations found that estimates from around five reps track true 1RM closely, while accuracy falls as the rep count climbs — the consensus is to use no more than about ten reps.
